UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ - On Wednesday, September 30, 2009, the Upper Saddle River Ambulance Corps responded to a worker who fell from a height of approximately thirty feet while painting a house on Deer Horn Court, in Upper Saddle River.
Realizing the serious nature of the call, the ambulance crew requested that an advanced life support unit and a medical evacuation helicopter be dispatched prior to arriving on scene.
Upon arrival the crew found a male party with an altered level of consciousness, obvious deformities to the upper extremities, facial and head trauma and suspected spinal and internal injuries. USR EMS, USR Police and a mobile intensive care unit from the Valley Hospital, in Ridgewood, NJ, worked on scene to package and stabilize the patient.
The patient was then transported to nearby Hess Court Park, where the Upper Saddle River Police, Upper Saddle River Fire Department and Saddle River Valley Rescue Squad had secured a landing zone for one of New Jersey State Police’s air units, NorthSTAR.
EMS and fire/rescue units on scene assisted the flight crew in loading the patient into the helicopter. The patient was flown to Hackensack University Medical Center, in Hackensack, NJ, a level two trauma center, for treatment.
“It was a challenging call that made you use all your skills as an EMT,” said Russell Baker, EMT for the Upper Saddle River Ambulance Corps. “We were fortunate to have such good help from the other emergency services on scene.”
